Patrick Townsend Lighting

I've talked before about how much I love lighting, so I am making my first ICFF post about lighting {and I do know that the ICFF was a month ago, I'm nothing if not timely}. 

Patrick Townsend lighting was showing over-sized but simple chandeliers.  They come in white and black cords and sockets but I really prefer the higher end looking cords and metal sockets on display at the show.   I could picture the giant one over a dining room table or in a foyer.

The fixture wasn't this blurry in real life, I promise.

BCBG :: Paper Garland Window Display

I didn't get the best photo of this BCBG window display but it's a nice example of something super simple.   Just some clothed mannequins and floral paper garlands {they might be snowflakes}.

The paper garlands remind me of this garland light by Tord Boontje.

Super simple but really effective, and I like the shape of this garland light much better when the garland is contained in the globe rather than drooping over a bare bulb.

American Hustle

The other week I had a cavity filled, and on the way home I stopped at a thrift shop in the area.  I spotted a few things that I became slightly obsessed with and thought I needed to have.  I walked out the door and then right back in to talk to the cranky checkout lady.  When I asked about a lucite chandelier hanging near the register, she immediately became my new best friend.

The chain is a bit raggedy and it needs some cleaning but it will be a great chandelier some day.  And it has a story, apparently it was used on the set of American Hustle, a movie coming out the end of December, and then donated to the thrift shop along with these lamps and a ton of other items after filming.

So I guess having a cavity can sometimes lead to some good happening.  Now if only my dentist had put googly eyes on the tooth drawing he made for me.  That would have made the day perfect!

Firefly Chandelier

On my wish list for when I have a bunch of extra spending money is this beautiful Firefly Chandelier by Studio KCA.  It's simple and beautiful with 100+ handmade fireflies.

The Light Bracket

One of my favorite items at this year's ICFF was The Light Bracket, designed by Alexandra Burr and Allen Slamic.  Not only do I love that this simple shelf bracket multi-tasks as a light, but I love the colorful cords and the enthusiasm both Alexandra and Allen had for their product.

It would be nice in a home office but I really would love to use it in an office project I'm working on to make the shelving a bit more special

Lamps

Every few weeks {or months?} Pottery Barn sends me a catalog.  I generally put it in the magazine file where I keep all my design resources, replacing the earlier version without much more than a glance.  I have to admit that I don't generally have the time to look through all of the catalogs I get until I need something from them.  And I generally look at Pottery Barn for accessories when I'm working on beach houses or need frames that are fancier than IKEA but not custom.  This time, a few lamps on the back of the catalog caught my eye.

My favorite is the first one below but I really like that these lamps all have a nice amount of detail to them {I think the first and last could use different, more complementary shades}.

Thrifting :: Consignment Edition

I popped into a few thrift and consignment shops last week and found mostly nothing special but there were a few things I really loved.

This waterfall desk is really great.  With the veneer pattern being so nice, it should be back to working condition with a tung oil treatment and perhaps a bit of stain.  The drawers were nicely dovetailed and I love the simplicity of the pulls.

 A bamboo vanity!  It's super 80s but I really like it and it was in excellent condition {with the exception of the bench seat}.  It wasn't cheap though.  The classic dresser to the left was very nice too, you can kind of see a sliver of it in the photo.

I fell in love with this hefty ash tray.  I think it's the bright orange and white combined with the metal that I loved and it would be great for holding paper clips or keys at the front door.

These 70s lamps {I want to call it a chandelier lamp} with the hanging smoked glass disks make me really happy.  Again, not cheap but in perfect condition.

Thrifting :: End of the Summer Edition

My wrist is still healing but it's doing a bit better now so I thought I'd do a quick post on my latest thrifting finds.  A few weeks ago I popped into one of my favorite thrift shops and found a few things I would have loved to take home with me. Two things did come with me, and I'll post about them later, but here's what stayed behind.

The first is an inexpensive solution to the strangely popular "boob light" you find in new houses everywhere {and sadly, a lot of my apartments}.   The faceted glass makes it look fancier than it actually is.  There were two similar fixtures there, but this one had a dangly bit on the end.

 This headboard caught my eye and would be great for a kid's room.  I would paint it since the wood color is a bit 50s {or perhaps that more gross 70s shade with the black flecks added, I forget} but in the right place it could go as is with a bit of a tung oil polish.

This rattan rocker was so great but it was broken.  If I could have found a reason to take this home with me I would have, so it's a good thing it felt like it was going to flop over when I sat in it.

There were two dressers there that I liked, the first one, in dark wood was really nicely made - something you don't find around much.  With some new hardware it would be nice as is.  I'd paint the white one below to keep it from being so "french country" or whatever it is now.

 

Jamie Harris Studio

One of the first things I walked by at the ICFF were these hand-blown glass pendant lights from Jamie Harris Studio.  I love the shape and color of these, they remind me of the 60s.

The pendants below are a little more serious, simple and elegant.  I love the double glass shades and the color on the interior shade.  I could also see them looking great in the colors above.

Lighting

I spotted this pendant fixture and immediately saw the similarity between these two lights.  One new and one vintage.

It has a bit of a kit of parts feel, and is a bit more industrial - although I hesitate to use that word.

I like the top fixture, I keep picturing it in a restaurant.  However, I still like the chrome fixture better.

Thrifting :: Mid-week Edition

Along with my clothes shopping this past weekend, I also fit in some thrift store browsing. I didn't find a ton of things I was in love with but I did find some interesting things.

This dresser is huge and well constructed. I love the simple round pulls {though it's missing one} and it has a jewelry drawer too.  For some reason, jewelry drawers make me happy.

I think it would be fun to have a vintage range and this one was super cheap {freezer basket not included}.  It had a sign on it saying one of the burners doesn't turn off though, so maybe it would be more fun to have a range like this if I could actually fix all the problems that might arise myself.

What I fell in love with were these 60s silver ceiling fixtures from Lightolier with four smoked glass globes.

There were two of them and while they are a little bit tarnished they are a great find!

I bet they would be sold on 1st Dibs for 1.6 million dollars.

Lighting

One of the best parts of some light fixtures is the shadows they create when lit.  I've always been a bit fascinated by this but I found out how much when I stopped myself from taking a screen shot of this Robert Abbey Anemone fixture.

Very pretty.  I'm a fan of this Jeremy Cole light for the same reason.

Thrift Store Chair Upgrade

I found a new thrift shop the other day after a friend recommendation I check it out.  I accidentally went to a different shop than she recommended since she didn't know the name, only the city, and only one showed up in my search.  It wound up being a happy accident since they had such great items and were soooooooooo cheap {plus they donate some of their profits to different charities which is a bonus}.

I really liked this teapot.  I had to dig in my bag for enough change to get what I was getting so this didn't come home with me but I keep thinking about it.  I typically heat up my tea water in a small sauce pan, so an enamel teapot would be welcomed.  Plus, it was $2.

These small floral lamps were kind of sweet.  I would probably take a can of spray paint to them to make them less sweet and more modern.  I would definitely change out the shades.

I could definitely see them in the color combination of this Anthropologie vase.

Then there was this chair.  I'm definitely concerned about becoming a furniture hoarder but this chair is still calling my name.

It's pretty sad looking as it is, but with a little elbow grease it could be great and perhaps a boxier version of the design center chair below.  I worry about my lack of elbow grease and my over-abundance of 'good intentions' though.

I've been trying to decide what goals to set for 2012 and perhaps finishing up projects {some, like my sofa and my cane chairs have had some progress made} should be one of my priorities.  I'm so good about helping others with projects but my own tend to be left by the wayside.  I'll have to change that.

Okay Art

I had a rough day yesterday.  I had a meeting with someone who couldn't stay focused and by the end of the day I had a terrible headache.  When I got home, I clicked on my blog to reply to a comment to find out that I had accidentally deleted my blog background leaving only large black & white exclamation points {that's what I get for cleaning up my online photos}.  That bit of ridiculousness helped some since it was pretty funny.

Then I found Okay Art.  That helped a LOT.

Mid-century gold leafed chairs?  Bright red enameled 70s lamps?  Really though, any chair labeled Disco is bound to get my attention, but their Series 7 Jacobsen chair is definitely now on my list of favorites and a good part of that reason are the bright red legs.

Formfjord

I'm sort of in love with these futuristic crown lights from Formfjord.  A part of me thinks they would need a very modern space to live in, but then again....

Flowerpot Pendant Light

 

I thought these little pendant lights looked very Pantone-esque {happily 60s/70s} and I was surprised to see I was right.  They are the Flowerpot VP1 Pendant Light by Verner Panton.  At the time, I didn't remember seeing them around before but I have seen the larger ones, it was the size that threw me off.  I'm totally in love with the desk lamp, someday I hope one of those finds it's way to my desk.

3Form

I mentioned 3-Form last week, and I am actually kind of excited about their new lighting.  It could be really great in the right office.

 

And the striped panels could be an amazing counter in a lunch room or restaurant or perhaps it would be nice as shelving?  It's plastic but it's made of 100% post-consumer plastic bottles so you don't have to feel guilty using it like I did when I bought my IKEA plastic coated lateral files {in my defense, I didn't realize the insides of the drawers were plastic until I was putting it together or I would have thought about them for at least another year before buying them}.

Jeremy Cole Lighting

I'm always interested to see the light patterns fixtures create.  Sometimes they are as interesting as the light itself as is the case in this Jeremy Cole fixture.

It's a beautiful sculptural light off, but I really enjoy the shadows it creates when turned on.

Lzf Lamps

I posted about Lzf Lamps from my 2009 ICFF trip, but I thought the simplicity of the new Pleg-A sconce was worth noting.

The wood veneer curtain behind reminds me of another window treatment I posted about a while back.

Studio Gorm - Milk Bottle Lamp

I really enjoyed these milk bottle lights by studio Gorm, with the double shade {above} or single shade {below}.

I really like the look of the opaque double shade pendant.  I didn't get a photo of one but you can see it on their website.
