What I've Been Doing Instead of Blogging

Working - and installing emergency fixtures that look like anime frogs {the ceiling was not my choice, promise!}.

Making homemade creme de menthe {for the winter I have switched to homemade limocello}.

Enjoying the flowers

Watching grass grow.

Eating some Concord grapes from the yard - they had to be reconstituted but tasted delicious {I planted these in my parent's yard without their knowledge, they were recently ripped out}.

Drinking cute coffee. This is the only way I'll drink hot coffee and it's totally worth the burn risk.

Enjoying the fall foliage...

Visiting one of my favorite bathroom floor patterns.  It's at Lovely Day in Nolita. I'm pretty sure I only go there for the bathroom though the noodles I get are fairly good and the waitstaff has always been nice to me.

Trying new products - my skin must have looked terrible for the sales person at TonyMoly to stuff my bag with four CC cream samples...

Enjoying some snow.  The weather has been nice but we had a couple of really pretty snow showers where the snow didn't stick.  Those are my favorite kind.

Louis Vuitton Window Display :: Pushy Little Men

Unfortunately Louis Vuitton stores are always in indoor malls in Massachusetts so a good photo of their window displays can be a rare thing. I debated for a few months on whether or not to show these images because they are so hard to see, but I decided in the end, it was an interesting concept, so here you are!

The displays were fairly straightforward, but scattered about there were little men holding up huge piles of blocks, pushing bags away, and performing various other 'tasks'.  They are almost like little tuxedo-clad elves.

Patrick Townsend Lighting

I've talked before about how much I love lighting, so I am making my first ICFF post about lighting {and I do know that the ICFF was a month ago, I'm nothing if not timely}.

Patrick Townsend lighting was showing over-sized but simple chandeliers.  They come in white and black cords and sockets but I really prefer the higher end looking cords and metal sockets on display at the show.   I could picture the giant one over a dining room table or in a foyer.

The fixture wasn't this blurry in real life, I promise.

Hermes Window Display :: Geometric Shapes

So I first thought these geometric window displays at Hermes was just okay.  Clean and geometric, but nothing special.

Then I really looked at the other windows and realized there were geometric people in the non-mannequin windows which is quite clever because just passing by you may not see this.

Some of these remind me of 1980s French fashion though, maybe it's just the poses and geometry but I can't shake that feeling with the geometric woman window.

Coach Window Display :: Flower Power

Spring is in full swing and summer is almost here!  What better way to celebrate than with this rainbow floral window display from Coach.

It's made of millions of tiny fake flowers but has a big impact.

Out and About

I've spent the last couple of weekends traveling to New York and Montreal.  It was for fun but it was also exhausting.  All I wanted to do this past weekend was nap and eat fruit and chia seed popsicles {from the Superfood Kitchen cookbook}, so that's what I did.

I have no idea why this picture is so crooked

I hope to share some of my photos of the two trips and this year's ICFF visit next week, just as soon as I whip myself and my computer into shape.

Happy Memorial Day

It's nice to have a holiday weekend right about now, even with rain and thunderstorms in the forecast.

For people in the states who are traveling today, take note of the words of advice below from the Mass DPW.  I couldn't have said it better myself.

Thrifting :: Not Much to See Here Editition

I haven't had much time to poke around thrift shops lately but did spy a couple of nice art deco pieces last month.  I love the egg and dart trim and the veneer patterns on the second piece.

This glass fixtures casts really nice light.  The base wasn't the greatest but that can be changed.

Spot anything good yourself lately or have the pickings been slim everywhere?

Fruit Trees

Lately I've been a bit obsessed with fruit trees.  This is a bit of a problem when you live in New England and it's freezing outside from September to May, you can't just plant some in the yard.  Fortunately, for my birthday last year, my sister bought me a Kaffir Lime tree.  It was about 3" tall at the time and it has grown nicely over the past year.

I was thinking I'd like a Meyer lemon and key lime tree because they are miniature in size and I can keep them indoors so, while I was out picking up dry cleaning last Saturday afternoon, I thought I'd swing down to Connecticut and visit the greenhouse my previous tree came from {my sister was smart enough to order it online rather than drive, but I decided I wanted to pick my trees out in person}.

The greenhouse was a lot of fun to visit even if you do need a machete to make your way through it, it's so stuffed with plants.  At one point, I had to jump into this orange tree to let people pass by.

you can see the rogue lemon grass stalk in the corner

I think my fancy new trees {at 3" tall they are really only a couple of leaves} will get along quite nicely with my orchids and money tree that I bought on the side of the road.

Louis Vuitton Window Display :: Box of Chocolates

I can't help but feel like I'm missing something with this Louis Vuitton window display.  It looks like a fancy box of chocolates to me, but part of me also thinks it looks like something else.  What that is, I have no idea.  I do know if I got a box of chocolates that was this expensive, I would never eat it....

It's been a while since I've posted, things have been insanely busy, but I figured today was a good day to put up some photos I've taken around the city recently.

Frost Heaves

Around here winter has taken it's toll and the inevitable "frost heaves" signs have begun popping up all around.

So bumpy roads are inevitable but at least we have pretty frost patterns around.

Also inevitable....the fact that I can't take a clear photo.  Someday I'll get it right!

I have been feeling very stressed out lately and not like myself but every now and then something happens that makes things better.  Besides spending more time with friends that make me happy, I also stopped to see the Chinese New Year parade yesterday on my way to grabbing lunch.  Parades are one of my favorite things to see.  I have no idea why but, whether it's the Hasty Pudding Parade in Harvard Square or the freezing cold parade at the Carnaval de Quebec, I feel compelled to take a look.

I didn't see a parade in the standard sense, though there might have been one, what I saw was a bunch of little parades, each with pairs of lions. I have to admit ignorance about what they were doing but a little research told me:

"Local businesses leave vegetables and fruit hanging from their doorway to entice the lion. In turn, the lion performs a dance and offers the local business owners good tidings for the New Year."

Other than the vibrant colors and the dances, what was most fun was how happy everyone was.  The little kids were running after the lions, there were firecrackers going off all around, and cabbage flying everywhere.
