On my wish list for when I have a bunch of extra spending money is this beautiful Firefly Chandelier by Studio KCA.  It's simple and beautiful with 100+ handmade fireflies.

Moving On

I have had what feels like the longest week ever.  I gave my notice at my current job because I received an offer from a place that is a much better fit for me.  Let's just say the supervisor at my current job isn't taking it very well.  Or it may be that she is her usual crazy self and I'm overly sensitive about it because I'm leaving.  Whatever it is, I'm so happy for the weekend and for only three more days of work in what feels like an uncomfortable situation.

Because of this, I thought I would end the week with a photo of something that always makes me laugh.  I can't tell you how many construction sites around the city have these baskets full of construction debris with what looks like the Chanel logo on them.  It's hilarious to see construction workers pushing them around during the day.

Local Fun

Last Friday I decided to become a tourist in my own city and take a Duck Boat Tour.  Despite being in or near the city for most of my life I have never done this, I have only quacked at the boats from the sidewalk.

I got to see the city from places I don't normally go, like the Charles River.  These are pretty much all of Boston's tall buildings.  We have three.

The Hatch Shell and the Back Bay.

The water view toward the Citgo sign {it is unofficially a sort of sign for Fenway Park}.

The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge.  I like to call it by it's whole name because it's a pretty fancy bridge and deserves a long title.  It is lit with blue lights at night and used to have a giant flag flying from it until the flag landed on a car below....

Carvings on the Salt and Pepper Bridge, aka the Longfellow Bridge.  It's falling apart which makes me feel really good because my train goes right across it twice a day.

Do you enjoy doing touristy things in your own city?  I had so much fun, I've decided to do it more often.

Window Display :: Hanging Logs

I found this window display at the Design Center late last winter and the photos have just been waiting to be posted.  I love the simplicity of these birch logs hung with thick ribbon {probably upholstery tape} and eye bolts.

I am also in love with that carpet hanging behind the display.

Flavor Paper

I always appreciate objects with a bit of humor in them. This Flavor Paper wallpaper looks like a traditional floral wallpaper at a quick glance.

If you look closer, you can see security cameras in the flowers.  While I wouldn't put it in a house, I can think of a couple places to use it where it would be appropriate.

The Smart Guide to Shopping at IKEA

Recently the new IKEA catalog came out.  I always enjoy looking through the catalog to see what is new, but I'm always disappointed when I go to the store and see the aisles of particle board, plastic and future broken items.  I have developed some "rules" for myself when actually making a purchase and I thought I'd share them with a small series.

First up is furniture.  There are a lot of things to avoid at IKEA, if you look carefully at a lot of their furniture you will see it is made of paper.  I'm not a fan of particleboard of any sort, with it's formaldehyde content and smell, but it is certainly more sturdy than paper. So, if you are looking for something to keep for a while, real wood {at IKEA this generally means pine} or wicker is the way to go.  I actually own the little rocker below and, except for the fact that it has been used as the world's most expensive scratching post, it has held up well.

STORNÄS Buffet / STOCKHOLM Chair in green

What do you think?  Do you have particleboard furniture from IKEA that you stand by?  I admit to having an ALEX drawer on casters and, it's cute on the outside, but crumbled on the drawer corners as I assembled it.
