Ace Hotel, Palm Springs, CA

The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, CA opened in February 2009 in an old Howard Johnson's hotel. Designed by the LA firm Commune, it takes it's design cues from the area in which it is located.

It's a bit like desert camping only it's indoors with old leather furniture, rustic stone walls and deconstructed hammocks in the lobby.

Some of the rooms are quite simple with slatted walls which hold everything from the lighting to robe hooks to artwork (you can hang your own), others also have walls covered in canvas giving the rooms a more tent-like feeling. The furniture is a mixture of more modern pieces and vintage finds and, as in the Manhattan hotel some of the rooms have record players and mp3 plugs.

There are some rooms which include fireplaces and balconies which are also furnished with an eclectic mix of furniture.

Attached to the hotel are the King's Highway Restaurant and the Amigo Room Bar. I love the graphics on the signage and the menu.

King's Highway is a restaurant in a former Denny's restaurant which has been renovated. The old terrazzo floors were uncovered and polished, the booths are also original. It kind of looks like it's straight out of an old movie. The food they serve is fresh and organic though.

The Amigo Room, described by Palm Springs Life as a old ranch-hand bar, is rustic and a bit wild west-ish.
